Peugeot 908 HYbrid4 combining hybrid technology with a diesel engine

Automotive 2011

Peugeot is presenting a car that will compete in endurance events throughout the 2011 season. After RCZ Hybrid4 that ran in the 24 H of Nurburgring last year, this is the second racer in history that combines hybrid technology with a diesel engine. This has been possible thanks to the change in regulation of the ACO for this campaign at Le Mans and ILMC.

Since the submission of their hybrid demonstrator at Silverstone in 2008, Peugeot Sport has not stopped working on this technology, provided in close collaboration with engineers from Peugeot. The 908 HYbrid4 uses a system based on the principle of kinetic energy recovery on braking phases and restitution in the acceleration phase. This recovered energy can significantly improve performance.

The system provides increased power of 60 kW (80 hp), which can be used during the brief seconds long phase of restoration. The stored energy – 500 kJ between two braking – in the lithium-ion battery, goes to the rear wheels automatically when accelerating (there is no command “push to pass). The electric-only mode can be used during the passage through the pit lane and will be used for the approval of the car.

After the presentation of the 908 HYbrid4, all white, Peugeot Sport has already set a new goal: shoot next April 24 in Le Mans as part of the Test Day 24 Hours of Le Mans. This goal is much more ambitious if anything, since its realization depends on both the smooth running of the preparation of the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the new 908 as the results of the first tests with the 908 HYbrid4 to be carried out end of March.
